Fritz Ober was born in Rosenheim in 1955 and learned to play the guitar at an early age. He built his first instruments in the 70’s based on guitar building books. Later he trained with the instrument maker Helmut Buchsteiner and initially focused on the construction of lutes. According to his own statements, the skills he acquired were decisive for his approach to guitar making, which was inspired by old masters such as Antonio de Torres.
The original ‘La Leona’ (FE 04) is the 4th guitar made by Antonio de Torres and is considered one of the best guitars he ever made. It was commissioned by the famous guitarist Julián Arcas in 1850 and finished by Torres in 1856. Fritz Ober had the chance to examine ‘La Leona’ and made some stunning copies of that masterpiece.
This superb guitar was built in 2011 and is in good condition. On the top there are two well repaired and stable cracks. The air resonance is between D and E-flat, creating a noticeable deep and resonant bass. The mids and trebles sound abundant and harmonize beautifully with the basses. It is a pleasure to play this instrument, which comes very close to the original. This guitar has all the delightful qualities you would expect from a high-quality Torres copy and leaves nothing to be desired.
