Gary Southwell – 1988 CF
Overview
Overview
Between 1980 and 1983, Gary Southwell studied at the London College of Furniture under Herbert Schwarz's guidance. In 1983, he set up his own workshop in Nottingham, specializing himself in 19th century guitars. Gary is constantly leading researches and documenting historical instruments. He worked on many public and private collections, including Edinburgh University’s collection, the Victoria and Albert Museum of London, the Paris Conservatoire’s collection and the Metropolitan Museum of New York. In 1991, he received a grant by the British Council to study guitars in Russia and spent many fascinating weeks in Moscow and St. Petersburg studying collections and talking to makers.
From 1992 on, Gary offered also a modern concert model and started developing the “A Series Guitar” with David Starobin. To sum up, Gary Southwell is a great name of the British guitar making, a fine specialist and above all of these, an amazingly curious and passionate guitar maker.
This 1988 guitar wearing the number 57 is based on a French 7-strings guitar. It has a beautiful spruce top and appealing flamed satinwood back and sides. The head is beautifully V joined and wears high quality Rodgers Baker style tuning machines. The top has a few perfectly fixed cracks - two below the bridge and one beside the fretboard. Sound wise, it is a great salon instrument. It is very balanced and the added seventh string not only extends the sound range, but also supports the mediums and trebles by sympathetically adding some more body and richness to the tone. A sublime instrument for seven strings romantic guitar aficionados.Included is the original case. This guitar is Cites free.

Classical Guitar
The classical guitar, with its soft nylon strings and characteristic timbre, has become a symbol of chamber music, Spanish tradition, and concert repertoire. Its modern form was shaped by Antonio de Torres in the 19th century, setting the standard for the body, fan bracing, and the 65-centimeter scale length that are still used today. Instruments in this category open up a rich palette from the refined Romantic miniatures of Tárrega to the majestic concertos of Rodrigo. Here you will find guitars that preserve historical continuity and at the same time inspire new interpretations.Look all products of the collection -
