Gerold Karl Hannabach - 1974 - 7 No. 248

Overview

About the luthier

Gerold Hannabach (1928-2015) was born in Schönbach, Czechoslovakia, in a music instruments makers family. In 1948, he started his apprenticeship in Arnold Hoyer’s workshop in Bubenreuth. He then opened his own workshop for classical guitars and for resale in 1953. He passed the examination as a master guitar maker in 1966 and started working as a lecturer for musical instrument making at various institutions. In addition, he was a prolific guitar maker and received numerous awards for his work, including the Federal Cross of Merit. Gerold Karl Hannabach is one of the most famous German guitar makers.

About the guitar

This beautiful guitar carries an amazing story. The intricately carved headstock was added several years after the guitar was originally built, crafted by a local woodcarver to fulfill the wish of the late owner, who was a close friend of Hannabach. This unique detail adds a personal and historical touch to an already remarkable instrument.

The guitar remains in very good condition, showing playing wear but with no structural issues. The nitrocellulose finish has developed the typical age-related cracks, which are purely cosmetic and common for instruments of this vintage.

Tonally, the trebles are round, thick, and remarkably clear, showcasing the well-matured sound of an instrument that has been beautifully broken in over the years. A true historic and musical treasure, this guitar is not only a testament to fine craftsmanship but also to the deep bond between musicians and their instruments.

  • Classical Guitars

The classical guitar, with its soft nylon strings and characteristic timbre, has become a symbol of chamber music, Spanish tradition, and concert repertoire. Its modern form was shaped by Antonio de Torres in the 19th century, setting the standard for the body, fan bracing, and the 65-centimeter scale length that are still used today. Instruments in this category open up a rich palette from the refined Romantic miniatures of Tárrega to the majestic concertos of Rodrigo. Here you will find guitars that preserve historical continuity and at the same time inspire new interpretations.
