Heikki Rousu - 2025 No. 481 True Temperament Fretboard

Overview

About the luthier

This exciting guitar was built by Swedish luthier Heikki Rousu. Active since 1990, Heikki has crafted nearly 400 instruments for musicians in Sweden and around the world. His portfolio includes classical guitars, lutes, mandolins, mandolas, bouzoukis, steel-string and bass guitars—each reflecting his deep understanding of stringed instrument construction. With decades of experience and a passion for both tradition and innovation, Heikki often keeps one of his own instruments close at hand for rehearsal and refinement, ensuring that his guitars meet the highest musical and ergonomic standards.

About the guitar

The 2025 No. 481 model by Heikki Rousu is a distinctive concert guitar featuring a Western red cedar top and back and sides made of beautifully figured ziricote. This carefully selected combination of tonewoods yields a rich, warm tonal palette with excellent sustain and tonal depth. The French polish finish brings out the dramatic grain of the ziricote and enhances the guitar’s elegant and artisanal appearance.

A standout feature of this instrument is its True Temperament fretboard. In contrast to the conventional equal temperament system, where fret placement involves subtle compromises to ensure general usability across all keys, the True Temperament system employs intricately shaped frets to deliver more precise intonation across the entire range of the fingerboard. This innovation results in enhanced clarity and a refined resonance that is especially valuable in polyphonic and harmonically complex music. For guitarists seeking ultimate precision in tuning and tonal purity, this system offers a remarkable and rewarding experience.

  • Classical Guitars

The classical guitar, with its soft nylon strings and characteristic timbre, has become a symbol of chamber music, Spanish tradition, and concert repertoire. Its modern form was shaped by Antonio de Torres in the 19th century, setting the standard for the body, fan bracing, and the 65-centimeter scale length that are still used today. Instruments in this category open up a rich palette from the refined Romantic miniatures of Tárrega to the majestic concertos of Rodrigo. Here you will find guitars that preserve historical continuity and at the same time inspire new interpretations.
