Hermann Hauser ® I - 1920

Hermann Hauser ® I - 1920

Overview

Hermann Hauser ® I as a German luthier, holds a leading position among luthiers worldwide. He took over the instrument workshop of his father while Josef Hauser ® was still managing the music publishing house. Hermann Hauser ® I specialised in making lutes and guitars but also remained true to the construction of zithers. In the context of the Guitaristic Movement in Bavaria, Hermann Hauser ® I built a large number of different guitars; in particular the Vienna models and the Munich models in all kinds of forms, but all in absolute perfection. The Terz, Prim and the very rare Quintbass guitars of Hermann Hauser ® I are of highest quality. Even today, the sound of those instruments is still unsurpassed. Based on his special virtuosity, Hermann Hauser ® I developed technical, patented innovations in the area of construction of the guitar’s tops and body-neck connections. The Spanish virtuosi Miguel Llobet and Andres Segovia became attentive to Hermann Hauser ® I’s art of making guitars at the beginning of the 20th century.

This is the earliest known guitar with a seven-fan bracing based on a Spanish model made by Hermann Hauser ® I. It was a special production for a customer in 1920. Up until this point, it has been assumed that Hermann Hauser ® I built his first model with Spanish bracing in 1924 – the year in which Miguel Llobet and Andrés Segovia visited him in Munich. Due to the existence of this instrument, we can prove however that Hauser® I had already dealt with Spanish guitar building, and had also started to structurally implement it before this famous meeting took place.
The head of this guitar has a Stauffer head silhouette, which is elegantly curved. This Stauffer motive can also be found here with this replica of a Stauffer model by Herman Hauser ® II.
The inboard tuners, made by Landsdorfer, provide comfortable tuning of the instrument. The big body has the measurements of a concert guitar similar to big Spanish concert models. The top is made of German Alpine Spruce, while the back and sides are made of maple. Another feature is the tailpiece. The guitar is in good condition for its age, and has only few repaired and stable cracks on the top. Only minor signs of playing are visible. A hard-shell case is included.

  • Classical Guitar

The classical guitar, with its soft nylon strings and characteristic timbre, has become a symbol of chamber music, Spanish tradition, and concert repertoire. Its modern form was shaped by Antonio de Torres in the 19th century, setting the standard for the body, fan bracing, and the 65-centimeter scale length that are still used today. Instruments in this category open up a rich palette from the refined Romantic miniatures of Tárrega to the majestic concertos of Rodrigo. Here you will find guitars that preserve historical continuity and at the same time inspire new interpretations.
