About the luthier
José López Bellido (1943–2024) was a revered luthier from Granada, Spain, known for his masterfully handcrafted classical and flamenco guitars that embodied the soul of Andalusian tradition. Having learned the art of guitar making from his brother Manuel López Bellido and influenced by masters such as Eduardo Ferrer, José established himself as a central figure in the Granada school of lutherie. His workshop near the Alhambra became a nurturing ground for future luthiers, including Antonio Raya Pardo and Bernd Martin. Renowned for both his artistry and his character, José was deeply admired for his kindness and generosity—most notably in 2021, when he shared his €10 million lottery winnings with sixty families in need. His passing on May 10, 2024, at the age of 81, marks the end of an era in Spanish guitar making, but his legacy will continue to resonate in the instruments he crafted and the generations he inspired.
About the guitar
This beautiful guitar from 1975 by José López Bellido is a remarkable concert-level instrument. It offers a powerful sound with excellent dynamics and a fresh, crisp tone. The guitar has a strong fundamental, very controlled overtones, and a natural, “woody” character that is both refined and alluring. It feels highly expressive in the hands and responds with great sensitivity to even the most subtle nuances in the player’s touch. From the deep basses to the highest registers, the sound is absolutely magical.
