José Marin Plazuelo – 2017

José Marin Plazuelo – 2017

Overview

Born in Granada in 1960, José Marin Plazuelo is both the nephew and student of Antonio Marin Montero, one of Granada’s most sought-after and well-known luthiers. José Marin began his apprenticeship with his uncle when he was only 14 years old, and shortly thereafter began building guitars under his own name. In doing so, he creates very finely crafted guitars of very high quality. His guitars are played worldwide by professional and dedicated guitarists. To this day he shares his workshop with Antonio Marin Montero and José Gonzalez Lopez.

J. M. Plazuelo has positioned himself as a worthy successor to the esteemed legacy of Antonio Marin Montero. This instrument is an embodiment of meticulous workmanship and a judicious selection of materials, qualities that are essential in high-end guitar making.

The use of a spruce soundboard is a traditional choice in classical guitar construction, known for its ability to produce a clear, bright, and articulate sound. However, what makes this guitar particularly unique is its round and warm tone, yet still maintaining its clarity. This warmth and richness often associated with cedar tops, indicate Plazuelo's skill in bringing out unique tonal qualities from traditional materials.

The choice of Ziricote for the back and sides further adds to the guitar’s distinctive character. Ziricote is prized for its striking visual patterns and its contribution to the tonal palette of the guitar.

A key attribute of this guitar is the blend of power and richness in tone, along with an extensive tonal range and sustain. These characteristics are crucial for a concert-level instrument, allowing for dynamic and expressive performances across various musical genres.

The guitar’s condition also speaks to its quality and the care it has received. Being in very good condition with minimal playing wear and no structural issues is an indication of both well-executed craftsmanship and diligent maintenance. This ensures that the instrument not only retains its aesthetic appeal but also its sound quality and playability over time.

Jose Marin Plazuelo – 2017 Classical Guitar Review

While this guitar is sold, these are ready for you

  • Classical Guitars

The classical guitar, with its soft nylon strings and characteristic timbre, has become a symbol of chamber music, Spanish tradition, and concert repertoire. Its modern form was shaped by Antonio de Torres in the 19th century, setting the standard for the body, fan bracing, and the 65-centimeter scale length that are still used today. Instruments in this category open up a rich palette from the refined Romantic miniatures of Tárrega to the majestic concertos of Rodrigo. Here you will find guitars that preserve historical continuity and at the same time inspire new interpretations.
