About the luthier
Joseph Fischer (1746–1834) was a distinguished luthier born in Füssen, Germany. He apprenticed under J. Anton Gedler and briefly worked in Vienna before settling in Regensburg around 1790. Fischer was renowned for his craftsmanship, producing instruments modeled after Jacob Stainer and Antonio Stradivari, characterized by well-executed soundholes and a glossy yellow-brown or red-brown varnish. His work was highly regarded, leading to speculation that some of his instruments were later misattributed as Italian. Fischer also mentored several apprentices, including his nephews—the Engleder brothers—and Petrus Schulz, thereby influencing the next generation of luthiers.
About the guitar
This beautiful romantic guitar is a truly special instrument that transports the player to a bygone era. It is in playing-ready condition and perfectly suited for the performance of music from the classical and romantic periods.
Inside the guitar are two additional labels that document its remarkable restoration history: one states that the instrument was restored by Georg Tiefenbrunner in 1851, and the other confirms a restoration by Hermann Hauser in 1912. These names add great historical depth and value, connecting the instrument to some of the most respected figures in instrument making.
The soundboard has several cracks, all of which have been professionally repaired and are now in very stable condition. The guitar functions perfectly and plays comfortably.
Tonally, it delivers the warm, intimate sound characteristic of romantic guitars, while also offering surprisingly good volume. A truly charming and historically important instrument, ideal for both period performers and collectors alike.
