About the luthier
François Leonard has been building classical guitars for nearly two decades in his workshop in Lorient, France. His formative years were shaped by time with English guitar makers and a period at the Lakewood workshop in Germany. These experiences, along with mentorship from Dominique Field, gave Leonard a strong foundation in both structural and aesthetic principles, especially those associated with the French school of luthiery. His guitars are informed by the legacy of Daniel Friederich and Dominique Field, and are marked by a consistent focus on clarity, tonal warmth, and refined craftsmanship.
About the guitar
Guitar No. 106, completed in 2026, exemplifies François Leonard’s mature voice as a luthier. Built with a spruce top and Indian rosewood back and sides, this instrument features an all-wood lattice bracing system that subtly enhances tonal complexity without compromising natural resonance. The result is a modern guitar with a notably organic sound. The basses are warm, well-defined, and grounded, while the trebles are luminous and free, retaining clarity and presence even under expressive pressure. Sustain is a defining quality of this instrument, lending itself beautifully to phrasing and legato work. Overall, this guitar offers a rich, articulate tone that remains balanced and highly expressive across the dynamic range.
