Overview
Manuel Velázquez was born in Puerto Rico in 1917. He first learned guitar making from relatives and from his own experiences at the age of 16. Encouraged by local musicians, he moved to New York in 1941 where he had better prospects to pursue a career as a luthier. Manuel Velázquez got a great review in the monthly UK journal Guitar News in 1955, the same year he built this guitar: [Manuel Velázquez] “is by far the best master in the United States”.
It is an absolute jewel without any cracks or repairs. Only some superficial playing wear is now part of the guitar’s patina. The time also had a charming influence on the varnish that lightly crackled on the top in a lovely way. The original golden-plated hand-graved Landstorfer tuner are still flawlessly working. This guitar has an incomparable purity in the tone and a fabulous separation of voices.
