Matthias Tilzer - 2022

Matthias Tilzer - 2022

Overview

Matthias Tilzer is an Austrian luthier established in the little city of Hall in Tyrol. He graduated from the violin making school in Mittenwald, where he studied under the guidance of Werner Bitterer, Helmuth Buchsteiner and Gert Esmyol. During his apprenticeship in Mittenwald, Matthias took a guitar-making course by José Luis Romanillos that led him to the world of Spanish guitar-making. From 2003 to 2018, he participated in a community workshop with the violin maker Bernhard Costa where he expanded his horizon as a music instrument maker through the technique of violin making.

Matthias builds guitars optically and technically in the Spanish tradition, thoroughly selecting and hand picking each piece of wood. His goal in guitar making is not the instruments' superficial volume but the tone's sustainability, which originates from a rich overtone spectrum. Instead of optical overload, Matthias aims for a classical elegance that relies on carefully well-balanced proportions and inspiring tone.

This Matthias Tilzer guitar, number 92 built in 2022, clearly shows his decisive goal and concept. It has a remarkable build quality, with immaculate execution on every detail. Moreover, it plays effortlessly, with smooth, round trebles accompanied by deep, strong basses. For the one looking for the pure richness of sound, this is definitely the guitar to look at.

  • Classical Guitars

The classical guitar, with its soft nylon strings and characteristic timbre, has become a symbol of chamber music, Spanish tradition, and concert repertoire. Its modern form was shaped by Antonio de Torres in the 19th century, setting the standard for the body, fan bracing, and the 65-centimeter scale length that are still used today. Instruments in this category open up a rich palette from the refined Romantic miniatures of Tárrega to the majestic concertos of Rodrigo. Here you will find guitars that preserve historical continuity and at the same time inspire new interpretations.
