About the luthier
Paul Hildebrandt, originally from Rostock, developed an early interest in making, experimenting, and refining objects by hand. His fascination with wood and self directed practical projects gradually led him toward musical instruments. He first studied the violoncello as a child and later took up the guitar as a teenager, deepening his connection with music and sound. A visit to a violin maker became a decisive experience and awakened a lasting fascination with instrument making. In 2021, Hildebrandt completed his journeyman examination as a plucked instrument maker at the Klingenthal School of Musical Instrument Making and, as the best graduate, received first prize in the national craft competition, the Leistungswettbewerb des deutschen Handwerks. He is currently continuing his studies in musical instrument making in Markneukirchen, a town with a long and important tradition in this field.
About the guitar
This 2026 Paul Hildebrandt is a traditionally based classical guitar with a spruce top, Indian rosewood back and sides, a French polish finish, Pagos tuners, and a raised fingerboard. Although rooted in the solid top tradition, the instrument reflects Hildebrandt’s analytical and contemporary approach to construction. The top is built with seven fan bracing and additional cross braces, supported by a stiff frame concept that allows the soundboard to respond freely while keeping the sound controlled and clear. The sides are built in three solid wood layers, with rosewood, spruce, and rosewood, creating stability without giving the guitar a heavy physical character.
A distinctive feature is the carefully rounded soundhole concept, inspired by the idea of a small tornavoz and by the acoustic function of a waveguide. Its purpose is to shape the air resonance and support clarity in the upper register while retaining depth in the bass. With an air body frequency around F sharp, the guitar has a grounded resonance and a bass response of notable depth, while the spruce top keeps the sound focused, articulate, and present.
The tonal character is immediate yet natural. The response is fast, but not aggressive, giving the player a strong sense of control. Sustain is one of the instrument’s most noticeable qualities, especially in the upper register, where the first string remains clear, present, and colourful even with nylon strings. The balance between registers is particularly convincing, allowing chords to speak evenly without one voice dominating the others. Soft playing remains satisfying and complete, with the tone retaining body, colour, and definition even at low dynamic levels.
This guitar offers a vivid range of colour, deep basses, clear separation, and a dynamic behaviour that rewards subtle changes of touch. It invites the player to explore contrasts of tone and volume, while maintaining a stable, well organised sound. The result is an instrument with modern responsiveness, traditional sweetness, and a carefully controlled clarity that reflects Paul Hildebrandt’s thoughtful construction concept.
