Bernabé Sr. (* 2. Juli 1932 in Madrid; † 10. Mai 2007 Madrid) was one of the greatest and most renowned luthiers from Spain. Before he founded his first workshop in 1969, where he worked along with his son Paulino Jr. from the 1980s onwards, Paulino Sr. worked in José Ramirez III’s workshop in the 1950s and 1960s. Bernabe guitars are still played in major venues all around the world today. Thibaut Garcia for instance, the winner of the 2016 Guitar Foundation of America (GFA) competition, has been playing on a Bernabe for several years.
The Model 40 made by Bernabé is a perfect concert guitar, with all the wonderful qualities typical of Instruments made in the Bernabé workshop in Madrid. It sounds very sweet with a crystal clear voice and the expressive trebles project with a refined timbre. Combined with the deep lush basses you have a stellar guitar that excels in all kinds of playing styles. When looking at the guitar the woods are combined in perfect harmony. The Back and sides made of straight-grained wenge have a deep lush color. Many luthiers consider wenge to be a perfect and more sustainable option to tropical rosewood. Paired with the German spruce top this M 40 Bernabé has that velvety smoothness that and so alluring voice. The setup is perfect and this Beranbé very easy to play with a responsive feel.
