Overview
Stephan Thumhart (1816-1850) was a Bavarian guitar maker that derives from a guitar and violin maker family. This guitar, made in 1834, and has a maple back and sides. The top is made of spruce. What's very special are the original tuning machines that are inside the head and fixed from the outside with highly decorated iron plates. The pegs are made of bone. It's obvious to us that Thumhart was inspired by René Lacôte when looking at the head shape and the style of the tuners. The original fretboard is curved like todays modern guitars and it seems that Thumhart, looking to other guitars he made, was not also driven to optimize his way of building guitars but also to improve the playability of his instruments. On the back, near the heel, you can see that guitar was branded with his name 'Thumhart a München'. Condition of this instrument is remarkable. It has some very well repaired cracks near the bridge. The one piece back looks beautiful and has only some minor repaired cracks.
