Dominic Flynn
Dominic Flynn, born and raised in Chicago, began studying classical guitar on his eleventh birthday after receiving a nylon-string instrument. He continued his studies at the Chicago Academy for the Arts, expanding his musical activities to include the composition and performance of jazz and classical works, and in 2014 he won the national YoungArts Competition as a soloist. After moving to Los Angeles to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Classical Guitar Performance at the University of Southern California, Flynn also placed second in the international Lee Ritenour Six String Theory competition in 2016. In addition to performing, he began composing more extensively for string quartet, jazz sextet, and classical guitar, culminating in several remarkable and substantial works and performances. These included multiple sets of original compositions performed at the Blue Whale in Los Angeles and the Jazz Showcase in Chicago, as well as a six-movement classical guitar suite. As a recipient of the 2018 EuroStrings Scholarship, Flynn toured several international festivals and venues across Europe, including concerts in Spain, Paris, London, and Berlin. He also had the opportunity to record the first three movements of his suite with Open Strings Berlin and the fourth with Siccas. For October, he plans to record the fifth and sixth movements with Guitar Salon International, where he also regularly works as a sound engineer. Flynn is a former student of Scott Tennant, Bill Kanengiser, Pepe Romero, and Vince Mendoza, all of whom served as important influences and mentors throughout his career as a performer and composer.
