Luciano Marziali – Italian Classical Guitarist
Born in Bergamo in 1976, Luciano Marziali is regarded as one of Italy’s most respected classical guitarists. His career unites technical brilliance, stylistic awareness and a deep sense of musical expression. Over several decades, he has performed across Europe and South America as a soloist, chamber musician and orchestral collaborator, earning recognition for both artistry and dedication.
Early years and education
Luciano Marziali began studying guitar at the age of eight and was admitted to the Gaetano Donizetti Conservatory in Bergamo at eleven. Under the guidance of Giorgio Oltremari, he completed his studies in 1997 with the highest distinction.
He went on to win numerous national and international prizes, including awards in Bergamo, Genoa, Ancona, Clusone, Koblenz, Cosenza and Parma. In 2001, he received first prize and the audience award at the Niccolò Paganini International Guitar Festival in Parma.
Between 1997 and 1999, he continued his studies at the Academy of Music in Darmstadt with Tilman Hoppstock, and later graduated with distinction from the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln, where he studied with Hubert Käppel and Roberto Aussel. In 2006, he completed his concert diploma and pedagogical degree, both with top honors.
Artistic career and collaborations
Luciano Marziali performs regularly in Europe and South America, both as a soloist and in chamber ensembles. He has worked with orchestras such as the WDR Symphony Orchestra, the WDR Radio Orchestra, the Sinfonietta Köln and the Junge Philharmonie Köln. He has played under the direction of distinguished conductors including Michail Jurowski, Semyon Bychkov, Tan Dun, Volker Hartung and Cornelius Frowein.
As a chamber musician, he is known for his duo with German guitarist Tobias Kassung and his work with the Fénix – International Guitar Quartet, alongside Hubert Käppel, Sotiris Malasiotis and Piraí Vaca.
In 2009, he received the Segovia Day Award from the Associazione Chitarra Bergamo for his contribution to music and culture.
Recordings and discography
Luciano Marziali has recorded several albums showcasing his artistic range. His first solo album, The Guitar in 20th and 21st Century (2006), includes works by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco and contemporary composers Giovanni Podera, Livio Gianola and Pejman Kayvani, some of which were written for him.
His later releases, Live in Cologne (2007) and Spanish and Latin American Music for Guitar (2010), capture his refined tone and stylistic versatility, with music by Bach, Albéniz, Villa-Lobos, Sor and Ponce. His most recent recording, Mia amata Italia (2018), celebrates Italian and European repertoire from Roncalli to Mertz.
Teaching and cultural engagement
In addition to his concert career, Marziali teaches guitar in Cologne, where he also mentors chamber ensembles. He is frequently invited to give masterclasses at festivals across Europe and is respected for his thoughtful, expressive approach to interpretation.
In 2014, together with Jhon Jiménez, he co-founded Guitar TV World, an online platform dedicated to promoting classical guitar culture internationally.
