Luciano Marziali – Italian Classical Guitarist

Born in Bergamo in 1976, Luciano Marziali is regarded as one of Italy’s most respected classical guitarists. His career unites technical brilliance, stylistic awareness and a deep sense of musical expression. Over several decades, he has performed across Europe and South America as a soloist, chamber musician and orchestral collaborator, earning recognition for both artistry and dedication.

Early years and education

Luciano Marziali began studying guitar at the age of eight and was admitted to the Gaetano Donizetti Conservatory in Bergamo at eleven. Under the guidance of Giorgio Oltremari, he completed his studies in 1997 with the highest distinction.

He went on to win numerous national and international prizes, including awards in Bergamo, Genoa, Ancona, Clusone, Koblenz, Cosenza and Parma. In 2001, he received first prize and the audience award at the Niccolò Paganini International Guitar Festival in Parma.

Between 1997 and 1999, he continued his studies at the Academy of Music in Darmstadt with Tilman Hoppstock, and later graduated with distinction from the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln, where he studied with Hubert Käppel and Roberto Aussel. In 2006, he completed his concert diploma and pedagogical degree, both with top honors.

Artistic career and collaborations

Luciano Marziali performs regularly in Europe and South America, both as a soloist and in chamber ensembles. He has worked with orchestras such as the WDR Symphony Orchestra, the WDR Radio Orchestra, the Sinfonietta Köln and the Junge Philharmonie Köln. He has played under the direction of distinguished conductors including Michail Jurowski, Semyon Bychkov, Tan Dun, Volker Hartung and Cornelius Frowein.

As a chamber musician, he is known for his duo with German guitarist Tobias Kassung and his work with the Fénix – International Guitar Quartet, alongside Hubert Käppel, Sotiris Malasiotis and Piraí Vaca.

In 2009, he received the Segovia Day Award from the Associazione Chitarra Bergamo for his contribution to music and culture.

Luciano Marziali has recorded several albums showcasing his artistic range. His first solo album, The Guitar in 20th and 21st Century (2006), includes works by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco and contemporary composers Giovanni Podera, Livio Gianola and Pejman Kayvani, some of which were written for him.

His later releases, Live in Cologne (2007) and Spanish and Latin American Music for Guitar (2010), capture his refined tone and stylistic versatility, with music by Bach, Albéniz, Villa-Lobos, Sor and Ponce. His most recent recording, Mia amata Italia (2018), celebrates Italian and European repertoire from Roncalli to Mertz.

Teaching and cultural engagement

In addition to his concert career, Marziali teaches guitar in Cologne, where he also mentors chamber ensembles. He is frequently invited to give masterclasses at festivals across Europe and is respected for his thoughtful, expressive approach to interpretation.

In 2014, together with Jhon Jiménez, he co-founded Guitar TV World, an online platform dedicated to promoting classical guitar culture internationally.

Luciano Marziali’s artistry combines precision and poetry. Through his performances, recordings and teaching, he continues to enrich the European guitar tradition and inspire audiences around the world.

  • Classical Guitars

The classical guitar, with its soft nylon strings and characteristic timbre, has become a symbol of chamber music, Spanish tradition, and concert repertoire. Its modern form was shaped by Antonio de Torres in the 19th century, setting the standard for the body, fan bracing, and the 65-centimeter scale length that are still used today. Instruments in this category open up a rich palette from the refined Romantic miniatures of Tárrega to the majestic concertos of Rodrigo. Here you will find guitars that preserve historical continuity and at the same time inspire new interpretations.
