Bernhard Kresse - 2021 A-Type

Overview

Bernhard Kresse is a very respected German master luthier based in Cologne. He is one of the most sought-after guitar makers worldwide, especially when it comes to replicas of 19th-century guitars. In the course of his career, he restored an impressive number of historical guitars and gained extensive knowledge about these instruments. Many of his guitars have been recorded by international musicians over the last decades.

As expected this guitar made in 2021 is a very lovely and well-made instrument. It is a concert model of his own design that has an elaborate cedar-lattice-bracing on a spruce top. This rather modern element is counterbalanced by traditional Indian Rosewood back and sides. In addition, the raised fingerboard is made in the Viennese style, suspended above the soundboard, and equipped with an internal mechanism that allows the height of the strings to be adjusted with a simple key. Finally, the headstock is adorned with superb Scheller machine heads, which contrast with the dark, figured Ziricote head veneer.

Our fascination for this guitar also applies to its sound. The very clear and easy to modulate tone has an elegant charm, with a notorious power and projection. The impressive ease of playing and the pure transparency of the tone in the trebles make this guitar a highly mesmerizing instrument. In summary, it is a true gem from one of the most experienced luthiers in Germany.

  • Classical Guitars

The classical guitar, with its soft nylon strings and characteristic timbre, has become a symbol of chamber music, Spanish tradition, and concert repertoire. Its modern form was shaped by Antonio de Torres in the 19th century, setting the standard for the body, fan bracing, and the 65-centimeter scale length that are still used today. Instruments in this category open up a rich palette from the refined Romantic miniatures of Tárrega to the majestic concertos of Rodrigo. Here you will find guitars that preserve historical continuity and at the same time inspire new interpretations.
