About the luthier
Daniel Friederich was born on the sixteenth of January 1932 and regrettably passed away in 2020. Although he had a strong desire to play the guitar, he lacked money. But at the age of 23, Friederich solved this dilemma by building his first guitar himself: a copy of a Simplicio guitar. Daniel’s guitar teacher and excellent guitar maker, Christian Aubin, was a great help to him. After building tools and gaining some experience in guitar making, Daniel Friederich showed his fifteenth guitar to Robert Bouchet. Since then, Robert Bouchet has inspired his work, and Daniel Friederich has personally developed some of R. Bouchet’s ideas throughout his career.
For decades, Daniel Friederich was one of the world’s most important and respected active luthiers. After a long and successful career, he stopped making guitars in 2015 and sold all his tools. Today, he is undoubtedly one of history’s most respected and admired guitar makers.
About the guitar
This extraordinary guitar, built in 2013 and bearing the number 836, is the fourth-to-last guitar ever made by the legendary Daniel Friederich. It stands as a sister instrument to Roberto Aussel’s 2011 guitar No. 830, which was prominently featured in Orfeo Magazine No. 1. The construction of both guitars is identical, with only a 20-gram weight difference.
The internal bracing consists of seven fan struts, two horizontal braces, and diagonal braces on the treble side of the lower bout. These elements contribute to the instrument’s overall balance and structural reliability. A copy of the construction details is included in the photo documentation.
This instrument is widely considered a holy grail among classical guitars and one of the most important works by one of the greatest luthiers of all time. Acoustically, it is nothing short of breathtaking. The trebles are even and sustained, producing a rich, consistent overtone series that gives the impression of a natural reverb, a result of Friederich’s masterful box construction.
Despite being a traditionally built guitar, its volume is among the highest of its kind, rivaling modern concert instruments. The guitar is also highly responsive, making it easy to play and extremely expressive in the hands of a sensitive performer.
As a pre-loved instrument, it shows minor playing wear and some scratches, all of which are purely cosmetic. There are no structural issues whatsoever. This rare and collectible guitar comes with its original certificate, personally written and signed by Daniel Friederich.
