Overview

About the luthier

The Dietrich family has been engaged in the craft of instrument making since the early 19th century, with a documented history in constructing mandolins, lutes, woodwinds, and violins. Since 1904, the focus has been on guitar and lute making, now represented by master luthier Frank-Peter Dietrich and his son Markus Dietrich, who continues the tradition into its fourth generation. Their workshop in Germany is well known for precise craftsmanship and tonal excellence, serving students, amateurs, and professional soloists alike.

Frank-Peter Dietrich is renowned for building traditional concert guitars as well as historical instruments. His work includes replicas and reconstructions of Renaissance and Baroque plucked instruments, inspired by surviving historical models and informed by decades of craftsmanship. Every instrument is individually handcrafted, with careful attention to tonal clarity, response, balance, and comfort. Notable musicians and ensembles have performed and recorded with instruments from the Dietrich workshop, attesting to their acoustic quality and aesthetic refinement.

About the guitar

This 2008 Frank-Peter Dietrich "Legnani" model is a handcrafted seven-string guitar that pays tribute to the early Romantic virtuoso Luigi Legnani. With its 640 mm scale and lightweight build of just 1160 grams, it offers exceptional playing comfort while delivering a refined tonal palette suited to historical repertoire but also interesting for modern interpretations alike.

The top is made of fine spruce, while the back and sides are constructed from beautifully flamed maple. This classic tonewood pairing contributes to the instrument’s soft yet rich sound, characterized by excellent clarity, separation, and a singing quality across registers. The waxed top and French polished back and sides highlights the natural grain of the wood, adding a warm and elegant visual touch to the instrument’s overall presentation.

  • Classical Guitar

The classical guitar, with its soft nylon strings and characteristic timbre, has become a symbol of chamber music, Spanish tradition, and concert repertoire. Its modern form was shaped by Antonio de Torres in the 19th century, setting the standard for the body, fan bracing, and the 65-centimeter scale length that are still used today. Instruments in this category open up a rich palette from the refined Romantic miniatures of Tárrega to the majestic concertos of Rodrigo. Here you will find guitars that preserve historical continuity and at the same time inspire new interpretations.
