Overview
Gamaliel Yacopi (1878-1951) is a fascinating figure in guitar-making history. Born in Italy in 1878, he moved to Barcelona, where he was very involved in the local guitar life. His instruments are of fantastic quality, and most of them show terrific refinement in their lines and design. In 1949, he moved to Argentina with his son José Yacopi, who became an influencing south American luthier.
This very interesting guitar was built in 1945 in Barcelona and is numbered 34. Its condition is absolutely striking, especially for a guitar built in the last year of WWII, as only one insignificant repaired crack can be seen on the back and one on the side. The fretboard was doubled at some point to improve the playability, and the tuners might have been replaced. Of course, this guitar was played a lot and now shows a nice patina with superficial playing marks. Yet, it is in an overall exceptional collection and playing condition. With its exquisite three-lobe head and decent precise mosaic rosette, it is one of the most appealing and best sounding Gamaliel Yacopi we had in our hands in a long time.
