About the luthier

Jean Marquet is a distinguished luthier based in Belgium, renowned for his exquisite craftsmanship and dedication to creating exceptional classical guitars. His journey began at the prestigious CMB (Center for Musical Instrument Building) in Puurs, Belgium, where he was awarded the 1st prize, the "Gouden Bootschaaf" (Golden Fingerplane), in 2019. Jean's work is deeply influenced by two master luthiers, Walter Verreydt and Gerhard Oldiges, whose invaluable insights have significantly shaped his approach. Known for his meticulous attention to detail, Jean creates guitars that artfully combine tonal beauty, playability, and expressive potential. In addition to his guitar-making, Jean organizes the Guitar Builder’s Expo at the Antwerpen Gitaar Festival, a platform that showcases the finest in lutherie.

About the guitar

Jean Marquet’s Modèle Contemporain is a modern evolution of the classical guitar, crafted to bring the qualities of his Modèle Traditionnel to players who prefer the clarity, immediacy, and directness of a contemporary instrument. While the Modèle Traditionnel focuses on rich tonal complexity and versatility for those seeking an expressive instrument with masterful nuance, the Modèle Contemporain caters to players who value quick response, precise separation, and a vibrant, forward tone. You can find more details about the Modèle Traditionnel here.

The Modèle Contemporain begins with a meticulously tuned spruce top, sourced from Gerhard Oldiges in 2001, to achieve the ideal compromise of flexibility and strength. To enhance projection and dynamic range, the Indian rosewood back and sides are carefully braced, improving also resonance and structural stability. Through Jean’s expert craftsmanship, the combination results in an instrument with a quick, intuitive response that feels almost immediate to the player’s touch. Treble notes float with a clear, singing quality, while the mid-range provides a rich, colorful tonal palette that invites exploration of soundscapes. The sustain is long and even, allowing notes to resonate beautifully, and the instrument maintains exceptional separation and compromise across the registers.

  • Classical Guitars

The classical guitar, with its soft nylon strings and characteristic timbre, has become a symbol of chamber music, Spanish tradition, and concert repertoire. Its modern form was shaped by Antonio de Torres in the 19th century, setting the standard for the body, fan bracing, and the 65-centimeter scale length that are still used today. Instruments in this category open up a rich palette from the refined Romantic miniatures of Tárrega to the majestic concertos of Rodrigo. Here you will find guitars that preserve historical continuity and at the same time inspire new interpretations.
