Overview
Jean-Noel Lebreton is a French luthier living near Avrillé in France. After successfully studying at the College of furniture in London from 1989 to 1993, he opened his first workshop in 1997. He has since specialized in double-top classical guitars, exploring the various possibilities offered by this sophisticated technique. Interestingly, he uses both Nomex core and balsa core techniques, mapping the resonant range of the top with one or the other to achieve a unique sound.
For this guitar, he used a Nomex core for most of the soundboard surface and a balsa core for the bridge area. This unique approach provides all the benefits of double-top construction, such as tonal volume, direct response and a wider dynamic range, plus an extra organic and natural touch to the sound. There is a small additional sound port on the side of the guitar that can help the musician to play more dynamically and gives them direct feedback, a very nice feature. The raised fingerboard is helpful when playing in the upper registers of the fretboard. The cedar top gives this guitar a dark and smooth tonal character with a comprehensive richness. The rich and gritty treble, coupled with rich basses, make for a powerful instrument that is by no means overwhelming but very inspiring for the guitarist.
