Jochen Röthel - 2021

Overview

Jochen Röthel, born in 1969 in Kitzingen, Bavaria, is a distinguished guitar maker, influenced by his upbringing as the son of a cabinet maker. After high school, his fervent passion for guitars led him to study at Lakewood Guitars workshop in Giessen under Martin Seeliger, where he met his future friend and inspiration, Michel Brück. A crucial turning point in his career was attending a Guitar Builders Workshop in 1992 with Josè Luis Romanillos in Cordoba, Spain, which fueled his specialization in classical guitars. Röthel obtained his master’s degree as a Luthier in Guitar making in 1997 and established his workshop in Oldenburg, Germany. Renowned for his restoration work and study of historic guitars from masters like Manuel Ramirez and Hermann Hauser, Röthel developed a unique building style, incorporating traditional Spanish techniques into his design. His guitars, known for their powerful, warm sound and elegant craftsmanship, reflect a perfect blend of historical reverence and innovative design, marking him as a prominent figure in contemporary guitar building.

This guitar, a creation of Jochen’s meticulous craftsmanship, sets a high benchmark for quality, built with admirable attention to detail. Its elegant aesthetic is nearly flawless, showcasing the refined taste and exceptional skill of its maker. True to Jochen’s reputation, only the finest materials have been selected, including a spruce top chosen for its superior acoustic properties and visual appeal, paired with Madagascar rosewood back and sides that add depth and richness to both its appearance and sound. Lightweight yet powerful, the guitar delivers an immediate response, with a velvety, overtone-rich tone and substantial body across the register. It combines a distinctively Spanish character with precise “German” qualities, such as a steady, clear voice and exceptional tonal balance, making it a standout instrument in both craftsmanship and performance. Although used, the condition of this guitar is mint, showing no visible playing marks.

My Favorite GUITAR OF THE YEAR! Weekly Guitar Meeting #135 | Soroka, Marchese, Montero, Röthel...

  • Classical Guitars

The classical guitar, with its soft nylon strings and characteristic timbre, has become a symbol of chamber music, Spanish tradition, and concert repertoire. Its modern form was shaped by Antonio de Torres in the 19th century, setting the standard for the body, fan bracing, and the 65-centimeter scale length that are still used today. Instruments in this category open up a rich palette from the refined Romantic miniatures of Tárrega to the majestic concertos of Rodrigo. Here you will find guitars that preserve historical continuity and at the same time inspire new interpretations.
