Martin Bretscher - 2025 Small Soul Lattice

Overview

About the luthier

Martin Bretscher is a guitar maker known for his exceptional craftsmanship and commitment to sustainability, fairness, and individuality. His journey into instrument making began with an apprenticeship as a cabinet maker, where he laid the foundation for his meticulous woodworking skills. In 2003, Martin pursued his passion for guitars and began formal training as a plucked instrument maker under Armin Hanika. He quickly distinguished himself as a gifted craftsman and earned his master’s certificate in 2007, the same year he was awarded the Master Craftsman Prize of the Bavarian State Government in recognition of his talent and dedication.

In 2020, Martin founded Soul Guitars in Bavaria, a workshop that embodies his values of environmental responsibility, ethical sourcing, and expressive individuality. Every guitar he builds reflects his thoughtful approach to materials, construction, and sound, resulting in instruments that are not only beautiful and unique but also meant to last and inspire.

About the guitar

The Small Soul Lattice model is a refined and compact concert guitar designed for players who seek maximum comfort without compromising sound quality. Built in the traditional Spanish method, it features a lightweight spruce top paired with apple wood for the back and sides. The lattice bracing system and a thin top of only 1.4 mm in the vibrating area beneath the bridge create a responsive and articulate voice, perfectly suited for nuanced phrasing and rapid passages.

Its 630 mm scale length, slimmer body depth, and distinctive Soul-Cut on the treble side provide an ergonomic playing experience, ideal for musicians with shorter reach or those experiencing tension with standard-size instruments. The neck is constructed from thermo-stabilized maple, and the fingerboard is made of curved katalox, offering smooth playability and structural stability. A French polish and wax finish leaves the surface open-pored, enhancing tactile connection and minimizing damping of the top’s vibrations.

Sonically, the guitar emphasizes clarity, quick response, and separation of voices, particularly in the middle and upper registers. While the smaller body limits the lowest resonance depth slightly, the overall sound remains balanced and present. The Small Soul excels in projection and transparency, making it a compelling choice for players who prioritize comfort and clarity over sheer volume or bass emphasis.

  • Classical Guitars

The classical guitar, with its soft nylon strings and characteristic timbre, has become a symbol of chamber music, Spanish tradition, and concert repertoire. Its modern form was shaped by Antonio de Torres in the 19th century, setting the standard for the body, fan bracing, and the 65-centimeter scale length that are still used today. Instruments in this category open up a rich palette from the refined Romantic miniatures of Tárrega to the majestic concertos of Rodrigo. Here you will find guitars that preserve historical continuity and at the same time inspire new interpretations.
