About the luthier
Masaki Sakurai, a renowned Japanese guitar maker, is known for his exceptional craftsmanship and his contribution to the field of guitar making. He inherited his passion for guitar making from his uncle Masaru Kohno, who was one of the most respected guitar makers in Japan.
Sakurai started his career in the field of electrical engineering, but after graduating from Sophia University in 1967, he joined the family business “Kohno Guitar Manufacturing” to continue the legacy of his uncle. Over the years, he honed his skills and became a master of the craft.
In 1988, he won the prestigious first prize at the fourth international Paris Guitar Making Competition, which cemented his reputation as a world-class guitar maker. His guitars are highly sought after by musicians and collectors alike due to their impeccable craftsmanship and exceptional sound quality.
About the guitar
The model “Concert J” is a stunning instrument, easily recognizable by its symmetrical bridge, as it is the only model in the Sakurai-Kohno line featuring this unique characteristic. Additionally, its exquisite back and sides made of Madagascar rosewood add to its visual elegance. Masaki Sakurai has built this guitar following the same tradition and craftsmanship as his uncle Masaru Kohno, resulting in an instrument reminiscent of the Model 30 from the early 1970s. However, unlike the older 664 mm scale models, this guitar has a more comfortable 640 mm scale, making it significantly more accessible to most guitarists. Crafted with the utmost precision of Japanese luthiery, the “Concert J” is of the highest quality, featuring a refined selection of precious woods and a meticulous attention to detail. It is exceptionally light and offers a beautifully refined sound, with particularly singing trebles that stand out for their clarity, delicacy, and even sustain across the entire fretboard. Even though this guitar is brand new, it already exhibits an open and well-balanced sound, a hallmark of all Kohno instruments.
