About the luthier
Oren Myers builds guitars firmly rooted in the traditional Spanish school, yet his approach resists replication of any singular historical model. Instead, he develops each instrument as a unique piece, adjusting the construction parameters based on the individual character of the tonewoods used. This includes precise tailoring of component thicknesses to match acoustic behavior. His plantilla is a personal design, and all decorative elements, from rosette to purfling, are original works conceived and executed by the maker himself.About the guitar
Commissioned exclusively by Siccas Guitars, this instrument titled Ancient Greece is the 140th guitar crafted by Oren Myers. Visually and conceptually, it is a tribute to the symmetry and elegance of classical Greek design, with its ornamental features inspired by motifs found on ancient pottery. The rosette and headstock incorporate finely bent wooden arches, reflecting the “tongue” motifs seen in Hellenic vases, while the back showcases an intricate fish-scale marquetry pattern. The guitar’s back and sides are made of 5,000-year-old bog oak, a rare subfossil material that not only adds visual contrast with its dark tone but also contributes surprising tonal depth. The soundboard is made from high-quality spruce, paired with Myers’ traditional bracing system consisting of seven fan struts and two closing bars. The result is a voice that retains his signature tonal balance and warmth while offering a slightly brighter, quicker response reminiscent of maple. The guitar exhibits excellent projection, crisp clarity across registers, and remarkable separation, particularly in complex harmonic textures. Its tactile comfort and overall responsiveness make it a standout in Myers’ already distinctive body of work.
Otto Rauch is a German guitar maker from the small town of Obermoschel in Rheinland-Pfalz. With over 35 years of experience as a guitar maker, he is one of the German pioneers of double-top construction. After repairing a Matthias Dammann guitar in the early 1990s, Otto Rauch began building doubel-top guitars. At first, he used cedar struts and then a balsa core, a construction he continued to develop over the years. While helping a friend set up his violin making business, Otto Rauch came across the name of the 18th century Venetian violin maker Domenico Montagnana. His cellos are praised for their dark tone, fantastic sound volume and enigmatic construction. As these three attributes reflect Otto’s construction, he adopted the name, and the Domenico Montagnana model was born.
