About the luthier
Raoul Aldrovandi began his career path in engineering, enrolling at university after high school, but soon discovered his true passion lay elsewhere. He left his studies to focus on woodworking, developing skills in carving, sculpting, and turning while working as a carpenter. His direction changed profoundly after attending a classical guitar concert, which inspired him to learn the instrument and eventually combine his woodworking expertise with guitar making. He completed a guitar-making course with Pablo Requena, achieving strong results, and used his engineering background to adopt a methodical approach to the craft. Influenced by Mario Garrone, Giuseppe Cuzzucoli, and Trevor Gore, Aldrovandi began designing guitars with careful consideration of how each component functions, measuring material properties and documenting acoustic data. Positive feedback from players led him to become a full-time luthier, creating instruments that unite traditional craftsmanship with precise technical understanding.
About the guitar
The idea for this instrument, No.8 “Ambra”, was sparked during a visit to Paolo Coriani’s workshop, where a conversation about bracing, materials, and building methods led to the gift of an old, beautifully aged cedar top from Coriani’s wood stock. Although Aldrovandi often works with spruce, he values cedar for the way alternating between the two has sharpened his sensitivity as a luthier. This guitar is his tribute to the tonewood.
The top is built with Aldrovandi’s own interpretation of the fan bracing system, shaped in part by insights from that meeting. It is adorned with a floral rosette framed by a mosaic border for a refined and elegant appearance. A bridge of Madagascar rosewood was selected for its tonal character, while the Indian rosewood back was constructed with specific vibration modes in mind. With an air resonance between F sharp and G, the instrument offers a voice that is both responsive and balanced, with clear singing trebles and deep, well-shaped basses.
