Overview
Overview
Sam McClaren is a young luthier based in the small village of Aislaby, in the North East of England. He began his guitar-making career at a young age, and after finishing college, he attended the Totnes School of Guitar Making, where he completed his first guitar in 2011. He further honed his skills at Newark, then worked alongside esteemed guitar makers like Peter Barton and Christopher Dean, which greatly enriched his knowledge and experience as he refined his own designs. Striving to create a guitar tailored to his preferences, Sam's goal was to achieve a big, resonant sound from a slightly smaller body, which he found more comfortable to play.
This 2024 guitar, numbered 75, is the culmination of a decade of development. It features a spruce top and ebony back and sides, with its elegant design accentuated by a striking 24-karat gold rosette, complemented by satinwood purfling. The back and sides are doubled with maple on the inside and ebony on the outside. These double sides enhance the depth of the bass tones, improve the projection, and allow the spruce top to vibrate more freely. A traditional 7-fan bracing system is enhanced with two additional struts between the bridge and soundhole, to allow the thin top to resonate as intended. The guitar offers excellent playability, thanks to its slightly smaller body and a very comfortable neck with a distinct D profile. Tonally, the instrument delivers a wide palette of colors with a sweet, rounded tone, featuring deep, rich basses and clear trebles.
