Overview
Santos Hernandez Rodriguez crafted his very first guitar under his own name in 1903, in his apartment at Madrid's Plaza de Nicolas Salmerón, historically known as Plaza del Rastro. Dubbed "El Bombon," this guitar was intended for his personal use. Throughout the early 20th century, Santos primarily worked for Manuel Ramirez and, from 1916, for Ramirez's widow. By 1921, he received a license for his own workshop at Calle Aduana 27, although some guitars prior to this date bore the Plaza de Nicolas Salmerón address. Notably, a rosewood guitar dating from as early as 1918 already featured the Aduana label, indicating early ownership of the location. Following a reordering of house numbers in 1932, the address was changed to Aduana 23, which remained the site of Santos's famed guitar workshop.
Following Santos Hernandez's death in 1943, his widow, Matilde Ruiz Lopez, was authorized to continue the guitar-making workshop under the name "Viuda de Santos Hernandez." With no children to inherit the business, the legacy passed to Matilde's niece, Esperanza Ruiz, who was married to luthier Feliciano Bayon de la Morena. Under the banner "Sobrinos de Santos," Feliciano managed the workshop and later mentored his son, Santos Bayon Ruiz, who ran the guitarreria until its closure in 2009. This transition ensured the continuation of the Hernandez legacy in Spanish guitar craftsmanship.
One particular instrument, unfinished for many years within the family, was only completed by Santos Bayon Ruiz in 2024. Composed of exquisite rosewood for the back and sides and topped with high-quality air-dried spruce, this guitar encapsulates the essential characteristics of a traditional Madrid instrument from the early 1970s. Despite being completed decades later, the guitar’s origins in the legendary workshop of Santos Hernandez are undeniable, making it a rare and historically rich piece that bridges multiple generations of master luthiers.
