Here the exceptional Duo Melis, formed by the Spanish guitarist Susana Prieto and the Greek guitarist Alexis Muzurakis, present the first performance of Firelit Ascent by Tudor-Mihai Gliga. About Firelit Ascent
Gliga's piece received the Second Prize at the 2024 Veria International Guitar Festival Composition Competition, whose jury was chaired by the composer and guitarist Stephen Goss. The title suggests the shape of the music: an ascent lit by fire — a rising trajectory carried by heat rather than force.
Writing for two guitars is one of the most rewarding and least forgiving tasks in contemporary composition. Twelve strings offer an almost orchestral palette, but the two instruments share the same register and the same timbre, so every line has to be placed with care or the texture turns to mud. A prize-winning duo piece is therefore a real test of craft, and having it premiered by players of this calibre gives the score the best possible start in life.
Why New Repertoire Matters
Composition competitions like the one in Veria do quiet, essential work. They commission the music that the next generation of duos will play, and they connect composers — many of whom are not guitarists — to the instrument's real possibilities. Much of what is now standard duo repertoire began exactly this way: as a new score in the hands of a duo willing to learn it. The Guitars: Siccas Luthiers Legacy and Synthesis
Duo Melis play two different models from our own workshop line — a Legacy and a Synthesis, both double-top instruments. Pairing two distinct models rather than a matched set is a deliberate choice in duo playing: it keeps the voices separable, so counterpoint stays audible instead of blending into a single sound.
