Ashley Sanders - 2025 No. 76

Overview

About the luthier

Ashley Sanders is a South Australia–based luthier who has been building guitars for over two decades. Originally trained as a cabinet maker, he crafted custom furniture for antique dealers and interior designers, a background that strongly informs his refined woodworking. Early in his guitar-making journey, he was invited into the classical world by an Adelaide luthier who recognized the quality of his craftsmanship and offered guidance.

Although first drawn to steel-string acoustics, Sanders developed a lasting appreciation for the understated beauty and tonal richness of classical guitars. He builds only a small number of guitars each year, favoring gradual refinement and deep attention over volume. His instruments reflect a strong focus on solid tops, allowing each piece of wood to reveal its natural voice. He describes classical guitars as plain at first glance, yet quietly complex for those who take the time to engage with them.

About the guitar

The 2025 No. 76 is a concert-level guitar featuring a cedar soundboard with a lattice bracing system. At the intersections of the braces, black-dyed maple veneer is used (not carbon fiber) to reinforce the structure. This detail enhances rigidity while maintaining a lightweight and responsive top, contributing to excellent clarity and projection across all registers.

The back and sides are made of dramatic Ziricote, known for its density, sustain, and dark tonal characteristics. The finish is a very thin application of nitrocellulose lacquer, chosen by the luthier for its durability and ability to fuse into a continuous layer, much like shellac. Though once hesitant to use this finish, Sanders has developed a refined method involving fewer coats to ensure safety in application while maintaining tonal transparency. The scale is 650 mm, with a 51 mm nut width. The guitar weighs 1970 grams and is equipped with Kris Barnett tuners and Knobloch EDC 34.0 strings.

This guitar embodies Ashley Sanders’ personal approach: slow, thoughtful craftsmanship, minimal ornamentation, and tone-first construction. As he writes:

“In reality I hope the guitars will be accepted and played, based on their merits alone with less of my story involved.”

  • Classical Guitars

The classical guitar, with its soft nylon strings and characteristic timbre, has become a symbol of chamber music, Spanish tradition, and concert repertoire. Its modern form was shaped by Antonio de Torres in the 19th century, setting the standard for the body, fan bracing, and the 65-centimeter scale length that are still used today. Instruments in this category open up a rich palette from the refined Romantic miniatures of Tárrega to the majestic concertos of Rodrigo. Here you will find guitars that preserve historical continuity and at the same time inspire new interpretations.
