Fabio Zontini - 2025 Torres - 2025 REG Special Edition 63 cm

Overview

About the luthier

Fabio Zontini was born in Milan, Italy, in 1971. He received his diploma as a Master Luthier and Restorer from the Civica Scuola di Liuteria in Milan in 1996. Over the course of his career, he has built more than 250 instruments, drawing deep inspiration from the great masters of historical guitar making. His hands-on studies of instruments by Antonio de Torres, Hermann Hauser I, Pietro Gallinotti, Francisco Simplicio, and Louis Panormo have significantly shaped both his tonal ideals and his aesthetic language.

Among his most formative experiences was a 2007 study at the Museum of Music in Barcelona, where he analyzed Miguel Llobet’s 1859 Torres guitar and the renowned 1862 “Papier Mâché” guitar—both by Antonio de Torres—which later inspired many of Fabio’s own replicas. In addition to his lutherie work, Fabio Zontini has participated in numerous international exhibitions and has given lectures at conservatories, music schools, and festivals across Europe and Central America. In 2016, he collaborated on the unique “Arcimbolda” guitar with a collective of 15 luthiers for the Roma Expo Guitar.

For more than two decades, Fabio has lived and worked in the Ligurian countryside, where the olive groves of Olle surround his home and workshop, offering a peaceful setting for his craftsmanship.

About the guitar

This remarkable guitar is part of the REG Limited Edition 2025 and features a scale length of 63 cm. Designed not only for players with smaller hands, this shorter scale also offers a high level of comfort and playability for any guitarist seeking greater ergonomic ease.

Built in the spirit of a Torres model with a modern perspective, the instrument features a simple yet effective 7-fan bracing system that enhances the tonal response of the spruce soundboard. The top has been torrefied, a thermal treatment that mimics the natural aging process and gives the instrument a mature, well-rounded tonal character, right from the start. As Fabio explains, it feels and sounds as if the soundboard had already matured.

The back and sides are crafted from ebony, offering tonal depth and visual contrast. The rosette design is inspired by historical examples, but interpreted in a distinctive personal style, providing a refined aesthetic. Alessi tuners and a traditional French polish finish complete the construction, adding both precision and elegance to this unique instrument.

  • Classical Guitars

The classical guitar, with its soft nylon strings and characteristic timbre, has become a symbol of chamber music, Spanish tradition, and concert repertoire. Its modern form was shaped by Antonio de Torres in the 19th century, setting the standard for the body, fan bracing, and the 65-centimeter scale length that are still used today. Instruments in this category open up a rich palette from the refined Romantic miniatures of Tárrega to the majestic concertos of Rodrigo. Here you will find guitars that preserve historical continuity and at the same time inspire new interpretations.
