Philip Woodfield - 2013 Grand Concert Lattice No.339

Overview

About the luthier

Philip Woodfield is a UK-based luthier who has been building guitars for over 30 years. His instruments are known for their clarity, sustain, and excellent note separation. The sound of his guitars is pure and sweet, while also delivering impressive volume. Being an accomplished guitarist himself, Woodfield understands the importance of creating instruments that are highly expressive and offer a broad tonal palette. His guitars are prized by professional musicians and collectors for their refined craftsmanship and distinct tonal qualities.

While his methods are inspired by traditional Spanish guitar-making, Woodfield incorporates his own innovations and techniques into each instrument. He carefully selects high-quality materials, often using rare or exotic woods for the back and sides. His attention to detail and focus on enhancing tonal character have solidified his reputation as one of the most respected luthiers in the classical guitar world.

About the guitar

Built in 2013, this Grand Concert model is a fine example of Woodfield’s craftsmanship. It features a spruce top with a lattice bracing pattern, designed to enhance projection while maintaining tonal clarity. The back and sides are made from Cocobolo, a visually stunning tonewood known for its rich color and excellent resonance. Additional design elements include a sound port and doubled back and sides, which contribute to the instrument’s powerful projection and tonal depth.

As with all Woodfield guitars, this instrument is finely crafted, offering a clear and balanced sound with impressive volume and tonal complexity. Despite being a used guitar, it remains in very good condition, showing only normal signs of playing wear. A professionally repaired crack on the back has been stabilized and does not affect the instrument’s sound or structural integrity.

  • Classical Guitar

The classical guitar, with its soft nylon strings and characteristic timbre, has become a symbol of chamber music, Spanish tradition, and concert repertoire. Its modern form was shaped by Antonio de Torres in the 19th century, setting the standard for the body, fan bracing, and the 65-centimeter scale length that are still used today. Instruments in this category open up a rich palette from the refined Romantic miniatures of Tárrega to the majestic concertos of Rodrigo. Here you will find guitars that preserve historical continuity and at the same time inspire new interpretations.
