About the luthier
Beginning his journey in guitar making as a self-taught luthier in 2012, he deepened his skills by joining a local workshop with several luthiers in 2014 and furthered his education in 2016 under British luthier Simon Ambridge. With just four years of experience, his craftsmanship was recognized when he became a finalist and placed fourth in the prestigious 2nd “Antonio Marin Montero” International Guitar Making Competition in Granada, Spain, in 2018. In 2019, he expanded his knowledge through visits and in-depth study with renowned American luthiers Jeffery Elliott, R.E. Brune, and Ervin Somogyi. Specializing in the construction styles of Torres, Hauser, Friedrich, and double-top guitars, he discovered a turning point in 2021 when repairing a 2012 double-top guitar by Matthias Dammann. Fascinated by its highly asymmetrical bracing and innovative nomex sandwich layout, he was inspired to explore new structural possibilities beyond traditional symmetrical designs. Since then, he has passionately experimented with diverse bracing and double-top configurations, continually pushing the boundaries of sound and expression in each instrument he creates.About the guitar
This guitar, built in 2025 and bearing the number 69, is a remarkable work by Chinese luthier Yan Lei, representing a synthesis of artistic design and technical refinement. The three-layer rosette is inlaid individually: the center layer uses natural wood grain to evoke a flowing Chinese landscape scroll, while the inner and outer layers feature white dots under black lines—symbolizing spontaneity and continuity throughout his career. The bridge decoration mirrors the rosette, giving the guitar a unified and elegant look. The soundboard features a double-top construction made of spruce and Nomex. Inspired by Matthias Dammann, Yan Lei strategically inserted patches at the bridge and above the soundhole to control elasticity across different regions. Five parallel braces, all angled 15° toward the treble side, work in tandem with the bracing to create a soundboard that vibrates fully and evenly—promoting excellent tonal balance and note consistency. The sides are made from multi-layered laminate, combining rigidity with lightweight construction. By adjusting density and materials, Yan Lei achieves durability without compromising tonal sensitivity. The back is crafted from solid Indian rosewood and reinforced with four cross-braces for added reflection. The neck is made of South American mahogany. As both a builder and a restorer of many double-top guitars, Yan Lei applies deep knowledge to ensure structural soundness and tonal excellence. Each guitar is part of a continual evolution—refined, tested, and built with purpose.
